Taking a trip to Mexico Delights is a great chance to unwind on white sandy beaches with warm waters lapping up from the Gulf of Mexico. What the city is infamous for, though, is partying and American spring break. It is a shame when you consider that the place’s history is part of the Mayan civilization. It is still the gateway to this world.

From the handclap echo at the main pyramid, which, thanks to amazing acoustics, leads to a bird-like noise, to the Mesoamerican ballgame, which is a seemingly impossible sport created and used during rituals, there is plenty to take in at the Chichen Itza. It is spectacular, but the various sellers across the site and their continuous jaguar noises can be annoying.
Beyond Chichen Itza Exploring Other Mayan Sites:
Although Chichen Itza is the most popular and well-known site. There are other options if you’re keen to delve further into Mayan history and culture.
Coba—An important economic and cultural hub for the Mayans, Coba was a center for a lot of trade, and the archaeology is incredible. It is positioned amongst a deep green jungle and between two lagoons, adding to the magic and mystery of the place.
Ek Balam—This is a fairly recent find and one that still houses secrets. It’s a perfect option if you’re keen to look at a powerful center that has yet to truly be developed.
Tulum: This walled city is one of the most-visited Mayan ruins. With fair proximity to Cancun, it is easy to get to, and the castle, which seemingly became an early lighthouse, shows the start of how Tulum became a prominent port and Mayan city.
Beaches:
An obvious must-see is all the beaches in Cancun. Playa Delfines is amazing and the most popular beach; it is undeveloped and won a Travellers’ Choice Award this year from a trip advisor. Playa Tortugas, Marlin, Caracol, and Linda are also worth visiting if you want to spend time relaxing.
Adventure:
If you’re looking for adventure but are keener for adrenaline than archeology, then you have various alternatives, like these:
Xplor Adventure Park: A truly unique park, this is a natural outdoor adventure spot. From driving amphibious vehicles through water and jungle paths to zip lines to underground rafts to a river swim observing stalactites, this has become a must for many visitors, and it’s easy to see why.
Xcaret—Another great option is this ecological wonderland. With Mayan history all around, it is a tribute to the culture. With pools, an aquarium, a bat cave, a jaguar island, an underground river, and dolphin shows, amongst other things, it’s a full day of fun for all the family.
